The spine is normally perpendicular when viewed directly from the front or back. When viewed from the side, it normally is gently curved. Scoliosis is a condition of the spine in which the spine develops one or more abnormal side-to-side curves so that it appears curved instead of exactly vertical when viewed directly from the front or rear. When the condition worsens, the side to side curves become more pronounced and the spine can also rotate or twist. Fortunately most cases do not get worse, although periodic checkups are advised to ensure gradual worsening is detected early. Although this condition tends to run in families, the cause is unknown.

Scoliosis is usually first noticed by a parent viewing their child from the rear. A doctor will routinely check for scoliosis during regular well-child checkups and many schools have screening programs for scoliosis. Scoliosis needs to be diagnosed early and can be alleviated through consistent treatment. Severe scoliosis may require bracing or surgical methods to prevent incapacitation.

Treating Scoliosis

Here are several of the signs and symptoms of scoliosis: When standing straight, is one shoulder higher than the other? When viewed from the side, does one shoulder blade protrude more than the other? Is the waist uneven—higher on one side? It should be exactly level with the ground. Does the body lean to one side? Does the person complain of fatigue or tire easily?
